CANTERBURY TRIBUTE. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 3. in a gathering representative of all shades of political opinion, and attended by about 360 people, the Prime Minister, Hon. G. W. Fortes, \va*s honoured by Canterbury residents on Saturday evening to .mark the attainment, lor the first time, by i man born in this province, of tlie highest office in tlie Dominion. The Chairman, Sir Heaton Rhodes, and Dr John Guthrie, who proposed the toast of the- guest of honour, Loth referred to Mr Forbes’s uprightness of character. Mr Forbes, in responding, said that lie had never been at a meeting where he had so many friends. He deiended the Government’s taxation proposals. Mr Forbes deplored Canada’s action in increasing her tariff on New Zealand butter. “I hope that we shall 'be able to obtain more favourable terms,” lie said. “It is a very short-sighted policy on the part of Canada, as the balance of trade is all in her favour. We do not think we have been fairly treated.’.'
