“NGAIO” CRASHES INTO WHARF

When the steamer, Ngaio was berth- ■ ing to-day, the engines failed to respond to the order to reverse, and the ■ vessel drove into Queen’s Wharf, and cut about three feet into the woodwork down to the water’s edge. • CITY BUS LOSSES. WELLINGTON, Aug. 2. Owing to continued heavy losses on bus services, the City Council has decided to withdraw a number, and reduce others. SUNNY NELSON. NELSON, Aug. 1. Although Nelson is noted for its bright cloudless days during midwinter months, the sunshine experienced during the past June and July constituted a record. There was only one day in the past two months without bright sunshine. On 22 days, over eight hours’ sunshine was averaged, while on 15 others there were over 7 hours. On the last day of July, 9 hours were recorded.

July was also the driest recorded, going back 47 years only, Seventeen points of rain were recorded for the month, being one of almost cloudless sides, frosty mornings, with an absence of, wind.
