EMPLOYEE FORGES CHEQUES'
TO GO TO AUSTRALIA
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 31. Because he wished to go to Australia to make a fresh start in life, Albert James Barnes, 33, labourer, took a cheque book of his employer, William Hoye, of Clevedon, and forged three cheques to the total value of £24 4s lOd.
The first, for £lO, was presented and cashed at the Bank in Papakura. The second he gave in payment for goods at a city store, but it was not honoured, and the third was cashed for him b.v a storekeeper at Clevedon.
Barnes pleaded guilty to the charges when lie appeared in the Police Court, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
Detective Naldcr described how, two hours before the Niagara sailed for Sydney, on July 14, he and two other detectives located Barnes on the vessel. He had booked under his own name as a steerage passenger to. Sydney. In his possession were found the goods obtained from the city firm.
