A POLICY QUESTION

The results of the ward elections for two members of tlie Southland Education Board were announced today. Tlie. deifbftt pf Mr / ; W ; Carswell by Mr FI G.'Stevenson, by-' one vote in the Invercargill urban area, has had a far reaching effect, • -The-Chair-man of the Board, Mr A. W. Jones, regarding it as a vote of no-confidence,-is tendering his resignation. Mr Stevenson Was for many'years the secretary of the Board. Air Jones said that the reason for his action was that lie had made it perfectly plain that lie was prepared to stand or fall by the policy to which he had pledged himself, and which Mr Carswell had kiyally supported.
WAIRARAPA AIK BO CLUB
MASTERTON, July 30. Wairarapa Aero Club has acquired the freehold of an area of 111 acres about 2-1 miles from Master ton for an aerodrome. It is undensstood to be the only Aero Club in the Dominion that has not yet acquired its own landing ground. The ground will very shortly be put in full order for flying, and it is hoped to erect a hangar within a fortnight. A Moth plane to be presented to the Ciub by the Government, is expected to . arrive in about two months. The Club already possesses a. Moth Plane, which will be brought to Masterton from Martinborough, ajs soon as the ground is ready. A number of trainees are awaiting instruction. The O’.ub was only formed a year ago CARPENTERS’ VIEWS.
WELLINGTON. July 31. The Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners sent a deputation to Mr Forbes to-day with regard to unemployment,- suggesting among other tilings the raising of the school age, so that fathers would not be under the need of finding work for boyis when they could not find work for themselves; the setting apart of an unemployment fund for the compulsory retirement of aged workers; shortening of the working day to say, six hours; more latitude in advancing loans to workers; greater facilities for the employment of carpenters on pt,l,|> works; that the Parliamentary Buildings should be comnleted and cli'-e-r necessary public buildings erected. Mr Forbes promised to go Mito the matters raised with the Public Works unemployment officer. He would see what co"’d ''o done in the matter of the employment of more carpenters.
