Senator Watson further expresses the opinion that the Conservative ,Ratty’s vie'tory would favour the United States and Canadian trade relations, since the Conservative leaders show a disposition to encourage friendly relations with the United States, and lie expects the Conservatives to draw up a tariff law to which the United States could not object as being retaliatory.

FOR EMPIRE FREE TRADE. NEW YORK, July 30. The New York Herald Tribune stated:' \ “One of the most interesting things will be the effect of the election on Empire free trade. The Conseryaties advocated mutual tariff concessions within the Empire, but this falls far short o-f the Liberal Party’s adoption of the Beaverbook philosophy. With economic nationalism so powerful a weapon in the hands of the Dominion’s political leaders, the hopes for the creation of a great economic unit out of the British Empire have certainly not been brightened by this election. On the other hand the Conservative policy of tariff reduction as a matter of quid pro quo bargaining, leaves the door open for some progress
at the Imperial Conference. , The “ New York Times,’ in a leading article; bn the Canadian elections, stated: “ For the chief importance of this election lies in the fact that the Dominion is going back, not only to the Conservative Party, hut to protective duties, aimed particularly at the United States,”
