CHEESE POOL
SOUTH TARANAKI’S VENTURE. (By Telegraph—Tress Association). , ; .' i HAWERA, July 28. Ninety 'delegates, . representing the Taranaki Federated Co-op. Dairy Fac . torios, after discussion to-day adopted proposals to .establish a voluntary cheese pool,"'the scheme being one to enable a premium to he paid on fiinest grade produce. ' " It was decided to form the pool for. South Taranaki. Twouity factories : voted for,' arid seven ' aghinst the motion for the pool which was proposed by the Federation Chairman, Mr T. A. Winks', ariu seconded by Air J.;. R. Corrigan, both., of the..'Dairy Board Federation Executive. , ” . ... . ... .. ■One suggestion put to . the meeting was an arrangement' to provide for twopools, one at Motul-oa, Netv arid the other at Patea; the'unpastpurised cheese to, be in a seperate,, pool embracing the whole of Taranaki.. The scheme was to be for one season, and the levy, on all cheese, was to be 2s ■ per. crate. It was suggested that cheese grading 90J- points carry a premium of-5d per crate; that cheese of 91 points, carry lOd; 9L} points, carry lod ; 82 points 20d; and 93 points 30cl; also that the New Zealand Dairy Board administer the scheme, as outlined by Air T. C. Brash, of the Dairy Board. It was considered by the Executive that, if possible, there should be two pools but,' if sufficient support were not forthcoming in North ;Taranaki, Federation members sending to 'Motu- •' roa would be invited to join in .the ■ Patea Pool, i continuing to send their produce to Moturoa as usual for grading.
Mr Winks said that the Dairy Board had discussed the proposal, and had found that it could not undertake the scheme this year, but would give its support if it were taken up voluntarily, and would undertake its management. Considering that 42 per cent, of the Dominion’s cheese was graded at Patea and Moturoa, he said, the adoption of a pool in Taranaki would have a wide-reaching effect. “f am very keen to see the pool go into operation,” said Mr Brash. “We have reached a crisis. If cheese goes much lower, it will be a question of whether it will be worth making. A pool is very well worth a trial. If it is successful, I think it will become "eneral in the North Island. If the North Island lifts the quality up to near that of the South Island, a national scheme is then not impossible.” The scheme, he said, would be so conducted that each, , ( |f actory would be debited with 2s per crate, and Credited with the premium. There were no great difficulties in the conduct of a nool. It made no difference where the '•‘l’cese was graded. If there was a surplus of the levy at theencl of ‘the vear, it would be refunded on a prorata crate basis. The meeting also adopted a resolution requesting the Department of Agriculture to appoint two or more dairy factory managers to proceed Home to studv the customers’ tastes.
