MAGISTRATE’S WARNING

YOUNG MAN ADVISED TO GO STRAIGHT. AUCKLAND, July 23. A well dressed young man, Norman Charles Speight, alias Nesbit ,aged nineteen, came before the Police Court this morning for sentence on a charge deeming him to be 'an idle and disorderly person with insufficient means of support. Chief Detective Hammand said that accused was arrested on June 24 on the charge, and the case was adjourned for a month to. see ho he behaved. “This is the young man: who rearms', from the South Island and attended the University, where he falsely represented that he was one of the Speights at Dunedin,” added the hief detectivq. “MJien lie last came here, it was said tha,t he was a. decent fellow, and that he should never have been brought to the Court.” ■i Mr. Hunt i I did 1 not gay? that. “No; but' that’s what"others represented at the time,” replied he chief detective. “Accused’s name is Nesbit, not Speight. If your Worship glances at his list of previous convictions, you will see that he is more of a desperado. He is working now, and some decent people are taking an interest in him.” After perusing accused’s list, Mr Hunt remarked,: “That list is enough to put you away for a long time. I will convict and order you to come up for sentence when called on. Now go away, and go straight. If you step over the line again, 1 will give you three months on this charge.” Nesbitt thanked the Magistrate, and left the dock.
