PROGRESS OF THE INSTITUTE. WELLINGTON, July 23. An indication of the extent of research work being done by the Institute of Pacific Relations was given at a meeting off the National Council of the New Zealand group, Sir- Janies Allen residing. Sir Apfrana Ngata, who was present with Mr Balneavis secretary of the Maori Purposes Board, stated that the board believed th einstitute was doing good work in the interests of the Muon race, and had decided to make a contribution of £SO a year for five years. It was reported that steps were being taken for the formation of a branch of the Institute at Napier, and it was resoled to approve of the suggestion and, if possible, arrange for a member of the council to attend the inaugural meeting. Professor Belshaw, of Auckland wrote. stating that owing to financial stringency it was unlikely that the Auckland University Council could raise the necessary amount against a grant from headquarters for the land utilisation research project, which was accordingly in abeyance. , . A small .committee Was set-up to co-' operate with the- Maori Purposes Board in controlling research as regards the effect of civilisation on the Maori people and the people of'the'Cook Islands. Auckland will devote itself to the Samoan side 'of the - study, -and; it is hoped, southern- will-colla-borate as it occurs to them.
