VOLUNTEER UNIT
AUCKLAND OFFICER S’ PROPOSAL. ; (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, July 22. Twenty Jive, officers, and; over 30 N.C.O.’s of the Auckland Regiment, volunteered at a meeting to keep, the name of, the regiment alive, while the Government’s defepfle,;; retrenchment scheme is in-force. Lieut. Colonel Dawson, who presided expressed regret that no proper opportunity had been given the officers and men to meet ini, a final -parade. If the officers and NlC.O.’s; would keep things going for 12- months, perhaps less, there would then be leaders capable of taking over - whatever form of training was instituted. Advanced training could be done in subjects for which there was little time in the past,, and there' were prospects of a six day’s camp for a limited number. Col. Dawson said to-day that everybody depended on the official statement m Parliament. If it was. arranged that territorials he abolished without reserve, lie was afraid any attempt to form a volunteer unit would he futile. If, on the other hand some scheme was put forward by which the 'egiment could be continued, it-won id not lack either old members or recruits.
