NAVAL CONSTRUCTION

Explaining the naval construction programme previously announced by Mr Alexander, the Government made a statement declaring it has accepted fifty cruisers as meeting the peace requirements of all members of the British comirionwealth. This renders possible after provision of the fleet and training establishment, for the disposition of twenty-two cruisers for service abroad. Of these four will belong to the Royal Australian Navy and two will be maintained by
New Zealand. The numbers remaining provides only the hare margin necessitated by large refits and fox the provision of reliefs. It will be necessary in order to secure steady replacement, to spread the building of twenty-seven cruisers over the period from 1930 to 1936, giving at least' three or four yearly, and for this reason three will be included in the programme for 1930.
