A WELLINGTON PROTEST
CUSTOMS CLEARANCES
WELLINGTON, July 7
Concern at the decision of the Minister of Customs not to permit clearance of goods until the. arrival of the vessel at the actual port of discharge was expressed by the Importers’ Committee of the Wellington Chamber ot Commerce in a letter which h«s been forwariled to the Prime Minister. The action of the committee was confirmed at a meeting of the council of the chamber this evening, and a deputation was appointed to wait on the Prime Minister on Thursday morning.
It was stated that, under the new arrangement, importers were unable to proceed with the costing of their goods and advising of travellers, and the ordinary course of their business was unduly interfered with. In the meantime firms in other centres, enjoying the earlier passing of their entries and the possession of their goods, were enabled to exploit competitors’ territories.
