Ada Lurline Catherine lUpfield, 24, married, was fined £SO for keeping a common gaming house at Mt. Bosk ill. When the polie e called the result of the first race at Wellington was coming in by radio. The woman had booked bets on the winner and run-ner-up,.
CURATE FOUND DEAD.
DUNEDIN, July 8,
John Wm, Foster, 27, ' a single Curate of St. Paul’s Cathedral, was found dead this morning in a room which lie rented. Deceased who suffered from fainting turns and was very tired iast night, was found lying on the floor. A gas tube leading to a ring appeared to have been'knocked off the jet, causing the gas to b e turned on. Deceased was a na,tiv e of Plymouth, England, and was at Oamaru before coming here. An inquest to-morrow. ■ '
DELAY IN LYTTELTON TUNNEL
CHRISTCHURCH. July 8
A broken rail in. Lyttelton tunnel delayed all traffic to nltd from the port this mornihg for two hours. 750 ferry steamer passengers were seriously inconvenienced,.'but managed to catch the south express. . .
FIVE MEN ARRESTED.
CAMBRIDGE, July 8
Following on the appearance at the local court yesterday of two young men who were remanded on theft of a motor car from the Town Hall oh Saturday night, came the most sensational happening the district has known for many years when the local police assisted by Hamilton detectives arrested 5 other young men. The arrested men are Sidney Walter Goodall, John Victers Featherston, Alfred Brown, Edward Brown, Allen Pennell f Jack' Meredith, Harvie Hall. There has been a series of mysterious happenings in Cambridge and Hamilton of late months including the- fires in unoccupied houses theft and deliberate burning of motor cars, The suspicions of the police aroused were confirmed yesterday when Goodall and Featherstone were charged with the theft of a car from Cambridge Town Hall, the upshot being a sensational clean up effected bv the police. The accused will be charged at Hamilton to-day and will probably be remanded. v
PAYROLL STOLEN
WELLINGTON, July 8,
Diligent inquiries are being made by the detective force into the disappearance of notes amounting to between £6OO and £7OO from the City Treasury last Friday, which was gathered in accordance with custom. The payroll had, been made up in a special box till ,it , was taken the rounds on the various jobs in the pay car. This box was rifled, notes being taken and silver left, apparently it being too bulky for the limited time the thief had to commit the theft.
