SHARE IN RUGBY PROFITS

DONATIONS TO CHARITIES 1

SUGGESTED-

CHRISTCHURCH, July 4

The; great success that has-attended the tour of the British Rugby team in New -Zealand has made it plain that the New Zealand Rugby Union is going to be, left with a very creditable balance when the final accounts have been adjusted. Estimates of the amount that will be in credit on the tour have gone as high as £20,000. The fact that the surplus will be very substantial, even though it does pot reach the high figure just mentioned, has prompted some people- to suggest that the Union should devote the proceeds of the final test match to the .relief of unemployment, The suggestion has also- been made that the cancer fund should derive some benefit from the tour, One man who has followed the financial side of the tour fairly closely, stated yesterday that, in his opinion, the Rugby Union had already covered the cost of the tour, which he put at approximately £17,000. He pointed out that the gates from ... the matches yet to conle would mean that the surplus would be very considerable. He estimated the revenue from the more important of the coming matches as follows: £ Second test match ... 5,000 Maori match 3,000 Third and fourth tests 10,000 Total ... £IB,OOO 7n addition to these matches, there were the remaining provincial matches which would still further swell the aggregate total. “I think.” lie said, “that the Rugby Union could very well make a donation for the unemployed, even if they gave only £SOOO or so. There are other causes that some people think should benefit: but I think the unemployed should be put first.” .
