PROTEST AGAINST DISMISSALS

WELLINGTON, July 4
A resolution was carried unanimousal at a mass meeting'of the Hutt Railway Workshops employees to-day, registering an emphatic protest against the dismissing of Railwaymen, whilst lio other provision of employment was made for them. PIECEWORK UPHELD. BY ARBITRATION COURT. Justice Frazer, in the Arbitration Court, at Wellington, struck out an application of the Dominion Bricklayers’ Union, to amend clause eleven of the award relating to the prohibition of piecework. Judge Frazer said, the Court had no jurisdiction to prohibit piecework. He remarked; “To be perfectly honest, the clause appears to be a pious bluff put in by the parties years and years ago.” He suggested that the question be referred to members of Parliament. VETERINARY ASSOCIATION. .WELLINGTON, July 1. The election of officers at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Veterinary Association’resulted as follows: President, Dr C. J. Reakes vicepresident, Mr A. M. Brodie; council, Messrs J. Lyons,-"J. Kerrigan and H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., .honorary secretary nnd treasurer, Mr C. S.'M. Hopkirk; auditor, Mr L. Scott. The annual report stated that the membership had increased by three, one member having left during the year for TJ.ganda. Correspondence had beep carried on with lavmenusing misleading titles and, in all cases except one, the wishes of the council had been observed by the offending, parties. The case which was an exception was put in the hands of the police, hut the person concerned had disappeared before action could be taken.
DEATH FROM INJURIES.
CHRISTCHURCH, June 5,
A yonug man William Worrall accountant died at the hospital from injuries received yesterday through being knocked off a bicycle by a car in Oxford Terrace. NATIONAL WAR FUND COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, July 5. At a meeting of the National War Funds Council it was stated the expenditure last year for the first time exceeded the income mainly due to the disbursements for unemployed of £5,0(30 anj to the fact that transfers were low, Imperial ex-soldiers in New Zealand received £7OB. Bequests received were to the amount of £1265 besides a' few donations. It was reported that since July, 1927, £14,370 was expended for the relief of unemployment. The Council was unanimous and thoroughly justified to authorise a further £SOOO This year. It was decided to investigate the position of the Auckland Veterans’ Home, the upkeep of which was a great drain on the local Patriotic Association and to afford help if it was considered desirable.
