A HORSE RACE
AN OLD TIME EVENT.

(Received this dav at 1.30 p.im) ROME, July 2. \\ message from Siena states one of the world’s oldest horse races, and also one of the most famous sporting events which is run round the central square of the town of Siena yearly . since the fourteenth century, was vif decided to-day in the presence of crowds from Rome and Florence.
Horses representing different dis- t tricts were ridden by jockeys wearing mediaeval costumes, steel helmets, breeches, doublets .and heavy riding crops, revealed that ancient- horse racing was a full-blooded affair. The % riders indulged in whip fights among themselves intermingled with cries -on Tuscan vernacular. ->(
The start was accompanied with a thunderclap of cheering and cries. As the race proceeded, taunts and blows were freely exchanged, hitting rival horses on the nose and aiming blows at opponents. Charging, crossing and boring were all part of a thrilling picturesque event., v
