SIR MAUI POMARE

Sir Maui Pomare, who was a member of Parliament for the AVestern Macrti eleetprate for a number of years was born at Paliou, Taranaki, on January 13th. 1876. He was a son of the late Wiremu Naera Pomare, chief of the Ngatiawa tribe. He married Miss Woodbine Johnston, of Poverty Bay, and had two sons and one daughter. He was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School and Te Aute College. He was a doctor of medicine of me Chicago University, and in 1901 was appointed Government Health Officer to the Maoris. In 1911 he became M.P. for the AA 7 estern Alaori electorate, which position he held up to the time of his death. He was created C.M.G. in 1920 and knighted in 1922. In 1912 he was appointed to the Executive Council as representative in the Massey Government for the Native race, and in the Coates Government he also held that ■ office and that of Minister of the Cook Islands. It was in his capacity of Government Health Officer to the Maoris that he earned a great reputation. He held the position of Alinister of Health for a time, and also other Ministerial offices. Sir Maui’s health had been the cause of concern for many months, apd not long ago he left for the United States in the hope that he would obtain benefit in the Californian climate.
