WEST COAST SCENERY
x, LECTURE EY AIR W. A. KENNEDY
y CHRISTCHURCH, June 30...
An illustrated lecture covering the West Coast was given to a large audience inutile lecture hall of the Workers’ Educational Association, on Saturday evening, when Mr W. A. Kennedy, toy means of lantern! slides, showed-the beauties of that region of the South Island.
\ Air Kennedy prefaced the showing of the slides with a brief dissertation on Westland in general. “It is a t ouutry of ,great and marvellous variety,” lie said. “Because it lias an exceedingly moist climate, and because it is by a great > mountain chain, AVestland is covered with an astonishing growth of verdure. A long) strip of country about 200 miles long, it is only about 30 miles wide, but the variety of its scenery, when considered in proportion' to its size, is equal to that to Ibe found in any single part of the world. A holiday in AVestland,. te always interesting and to, the lover of nature it cannot fail to he ideal.”
The first of a great number : of lantern slides were then screened, the series ranging from picture of Otira and Arthur’s Pass, to scenes ..taken from points on the mountains at the head of the Fox Glacier. The Otira Gorge was shown in summer and winter, and the beauties of the walk fj-om Arthur’s Pass township to Otira were stressed by many excellent views. In addition, the .flowers to lie found en route had been photographed, and as they were put on the screen were described in detail by the• lecturer. . Lake Brunner or Moana, received duo attention by Air Kennedy, and; a series of pictures of sunsets over the 'Western sea taken from Hokitika,, gained the audience’s approval in a marked fashion. After showing views of Lake Ivanieri the lecturer proceeded southwards .to ltoss. He cm-, phasised the importance of walking, to better appreciate the scenery, and said that on a fine morning 14 miles were soon covered. The tramper was able to leave the road and penetrate into the bush, thus discovering beauty spots which would never be found by the motorist. The road made detours to visit various lakes and was a very good one. , Delightful views of the Southern Alps had been obtained bypMr. Kennedy, and a ■ considerable number of slides were devoted to “close-ups” of the " Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, crevasses and hummocks being shown in nil their immensity. Air Kennedy was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. " »
