Losing her balance while sliding on the frozen surface of Margaret’s Tarn, a tiny lake on the track to the Bealey Glacier, Miss' Vera Neilson, j.v.of Christchurch, one of the exoursionists who journeyed to Arthur’s Pass -on Sunday, fell heavily” on the ■ ice and \ sustained a painful-injury to ; qer back, necessitating her being carried back to the train on an improvised ambulance. •
“Bowls is a game entirely for men,” said a . member of the Sumner Bowling Club when it wits proposed at the annual meeting that ladies should be admitted as members, “It is the only chance a man has of getting away from his wife,” he added amid laughter. After a lengthy discussion it was decided that the club was not in a position to provide the necessary accommodation for lady members, although there was no reason why ladies should not be able to play bowls.
A fire engine laden with a crew proceeding to an outbreak at Linwood met with an accident at the intersection of Fit.zgera].(|; Avenue . and Armagh Street, Christchurch, a few minutes before 1 p.m. on Saturday. Turning from the avenue into Armagh Street, the engine took too fbig a curve. One wheel went into a deep gutter on the north side of Armagh Street and the superstructure grazed an electrie light pole. This apparentll deprived the driver temporarily of control and Ithe machine swung round and crashed through an iron fence on the south side of the ro&d. One man was thrown out but none of the occupants were , injured. The windscreen of the engine (a ibig Dennis vehicle) was badly smashed, two lamps were damaged and other minor damage was done. ' , ,
