WESTLAND ROADS
THE MEMBER’S. ACTIVITIES.

WELLINGTON, July 1, The importance of roading in Westland is being impressed upon the Government by Mr . James O’Brien, Member for the District, as a result of his late tour of the southern district and portion of Kopa,ra district in the north.
Mr O’Brien was greatly impressed with the settlement prospects and is taking an early opportunity to bring tlie position before the head of the Government. He is asking for roading works to be advanced so that setlement will follow more successfully. He is also taking up various works in Westland County, including protection of Koiterangi laujds from. Hokitika : River erosion and proposes a scheme of control of flood waters J from Diedrichs Creek to assist in saving further river inroads. This work will cost considerably less than the main protection of the river Ibank at first proposed, which was estimated to cost £2OOO. The lesser scheme suggested will be about a sixth of Bio oost and would probably do .vhat Is required, ' . Matters of road grants . and further maintenance for the Main South Road which stands in some jeopardy, are also being taken ,up by Mr O'Brien.
