REPORTED TRAGEDY
AYESTPORT, June 25
A man from a mining township reported to the police at Westport this ‘afternoon, .that while he was fishing under the wharf, a man either' fell from or dived off the s.s. Kawatin into the river, lie alleged that lie jumped in and attempted to save the man, who struggled violently and his would-be rescuer let him go to s;ue himself and the man sank.
The police made inquiries, but knew of no one missing and they are not inclined to put much faith in the statement.
DAIRY ASSOCIATION
CONFERENCE. HAAULTON. June 26.
Consideration of remits was continued at the Conference of the National Dairy Association.., to-day. It was decided to form a Dairy Employees Association for the Auckland district to watch the interests of employees in arbitration matters. A remit strongly urging all dairy men to purchase British goods in preference to'Canadian, Australian or American articles, in view of the prohibitive duty imposed on our goods, was carried.
It was " decided to urge the removal of the duty on imported, grain, stock and goods particularly with a view to assisting the' pig iiidnstfy.

CHRISTCHURCH, June 26.
An inquest touching tlie death of James Beattie was held this afternoon.. Evidence was given by R. Beattie, ii soil of the deceased, and. Dry M’hettfir, that Beatricfe.hfid recently had av'seveije attack of influenza, which had accompanied duriilg illness and cohfi valescence by acute depression, which’ greatly retarded his return to health. Coroner E. D. Mosley found death "was due to a gunshot wound in the head, self-inflicted, while Beattie was suffering extreme mental depression following an attack of influenza.;

A giiest in a private hotel, at Hawera is stated to have been relieved of £34 last evening, when his trousers were removed from- under the-mattress-of his bed. The loss was discovered in the early hours of the morning. It was then discovered that two casuals, who had booked in at the hotel together, had disappeared. Tne case is the fifth in two days of reported depredations bv thieves. .
