'Hie Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s winter meeting opened in fine weather. The course and the attendance were good. The totalisator handled £9035, compared with £lO.-1-77 for the first day of the winter meeting last year.

Winter Handicap.—(l) Best Friend 1. (6) Adventus 2. (4) Whakaari 3. Won by a length; half a head. Time 1.56 4-5.

Hastings Handicap.—(6) Lordlike 1, (10) Taranto 2, (2) Keen 3. Won by on e and a half lengths; half a neck. Time 1.21 2-5.

Hertaunga Handicap.—(G) Bold Front 1, (8) Chopin 2, (2) Moutoa Treasury 3. Mon by half a head; two lengths. Time 1.21.
