TEACHERS’ REQUEST
By Telegraph, Per Press Abjociation.)
WELLINGTON, June 20
In reply to a request by the Federation of Teachers that the size of classes of primary schools e reduced, Hon. H. Atmore, states: —“You are probably not aware that since February Ist, when the school resumed 153 extra teachers were appointed with a view to reducing the sve of the classes. This should be understood by members of your Federation. I fully realise the necessity for reducing the size of the classes that the teacher may have a thorough understanding of the possibilities and aptitude of each girl and boy, and this is certainly impossible if they are faced with the work off teaching large numbers. The difficulty of course is' one of finance and the difficulty is intensified this year by the falling off in the national income, which will be reflected in decreased Government revenue.
Bald statements in the press without recognition of what had been done in the direction indicated, gives an unfair impression to the general reader, and I am sure tin’s is not the intention of the members of your Federation.”
