A STRONG PROTEST

AGAINST SHRARKRS LIVING CONDITIONS. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June ‘2O. A strong protest, against the living conditions of shearers in various parts of the country was made by a. deputation from the New Zealand Workers Lnion to the Minister of Labour (Mr A. G. Smith). It was pointed out to the Minister that shearers were supposed to work under the Shearers Accommodation Act which provided for good living conditions on farms and other facilities giving for them necessities of life. It was stated in many eases the men were forced to put up with extremely bad conditions. The Minister gave his assurance that the question would he fully investigated, and that if possible lie would make a personal inspection of the accommodation in some .parts. He would make .his own decisions and would not Ibe. dictated to by someone ejse. He hoped to make bis position a live one and see that the law was carried out. The deputation had bis assurance that the workers would be protected and that their living conditions would be looked after.
