James Yates, manufacturer, of Newtown, a Sydney sub :rb, was convicted on several charges of defrauding the Income 'Fax Department by means of false returns, lie understating his income between 1924 and 1929 by €17,000. He was lined. £IOOO, or in default 12 months’ gaol.

SYDNEY, June 17
The State Government lias asserted to its Economy Bills that were passed by the New South Wales Parliament only after strenuous opposition in the Assembly. These Bills increase the working hours from forty-four to forty-eight per week. They permit tMe rationing of employment- and also authorise the. reduction of the Public service salaries, as well as the imposition of an unemployment tax of three pence in the pound 'on all earnings. The Bills also provide for a reorganisation of the Government relief administration.
The measures will come into operation on July Ist.
