CHANGE IN PERSONNEL

WELLINGTON, June 16

One change in the personnel of the Dairy Produce Board was made by the election which took place to-day. Five vacancies were caused by the statutory retirement of producers’ representatives.

For Ward 3 (Waikato and Bay of Plenty) the retiring member. Air S. A. Ferguson (Alofuniaoho, Alorriusville), was defeated by Air C. L. Luke (To Puke).

For Ward 4 (Taranaki) Air J. Hine (acting-chairman) was re-elected unopposed. For Ward 7 (North Canterbury, Westland, Nelson and Alarlborougli) the retiring member, Air H. T. Chapman (Little River) was re-elected by a comfortable majority.

WELLINGTON TO RAISE LOAN

WELLINGTON, June

The AYellingtdn City Council lias decided to raise an unemployment relief loan, totalling £-15,000. The ActingAlayor mentioned that the council had been able -to secure very much better conditions than hitherto, in respect to the Government’s subsidy.

A HARBOUR RATE.

WANG AN UT, June 16

It is now definite that the Wanganui Harbour Board will .strike’a rate this year for the first time. The city and counties of Wanganui, Waitotara and Waimarino are affected. The rate will approximate three-eighths of a penny in, the pound in the city, and threesixteenths of a penny in the counties. The board intends to place loan proposals before me ratepayers in 'the near future -for raising and extending the moles. The depth on the bar is greater now than ever.

TEA ROOAIS BURNT.

CHRISTO HU R-H, June 17

The Maori Tearooms, at New Brighton, were totally destroyed by fire at one o’clock this morning. The estabishment consisted of a tearoom confectioners shop, and four living rooms, and was owned by Air 11. Alc"oniack, of Christchurch, and was leased by Airs AI. East, and carried or bv Mrs AVarcl. The cause of the fire is, unknown. The building was insured if or £7OO in the Guardian Office, and the contents for £1250 in the National Office.

BOWLER’S SUDDEN DEATH

DUNEDIN, June 17

A man- named John J’ietersen, 68, years., of age, was found dead at ms residence' this morning. An inquest will not be necessary. Deceased was a prominent meinber of the Dunedin Howling Club,, and was a member ol tile New Zealand Bowling team which toured Great Britain in 1928.

AKAROA TRAGEDY

CHRISTCHURCH, June 17

The -body of Ernest Smart, aged about 70, and -unmarried, was recovered in Akaroa Harbour to-day. Smart -'aid been missing since Saturday, and to-day a part of the harbour wasdragby flic': police] 'fishermen and rt sidents, with the-.result that the body -was- brought to. the surface near, the fishermen’*,' Avhai'i’. ...

INVERCARGILL, June 17

At a sitting of the Bluff PoliceCourt to-clav, two stowaways, Francis HrfDonald, aged 27, and .Michael McDonald Boyd, aged 2(5, who were found on the inter-colonial steamer. Karetu, were sentenced to 21 days’ hard labour.

HOSPITAL FEE RAISED

The Hospital Board has decided tc raise its charge for treatment from "s to 10s per day.

HOUSE BURNT

ASHBURTON, June 18.

A live roomed house, owned and occupied hv W. 1). Plunkett was destroy ed witli the contents by fire early this morning. Plunkett was awakened by a neighbour’s dog barking. The place was then blazing and they had a difficulty in rescuing a child from a back room. Insurance Gooo on house, in New Zealand office, hut none on the furniture.
