AN INQUEST

HAMILTON, June 16.

At the inquest on Thomas Barton Shaw, a young farmer off Taiwhare who was killed in a collision between two cars at Newstead on May Bth, one of which was driven by his cousin Hector John Shaw, the coroner found deceased met his death through head injuries, as a result of a collision, further that Hector Shaw drove the car in a manner dangerous to the public.

ATTEMPTED ESCAPE

HAMILTON, June 16

Wliare Matanli, who was sentenced this morning in the Supreme Court to two years hard and declared an habitual criminal attempted to break away from the police escort on leaving the •ourt to bis cell. It took the combined efforts of several warders and policemen to handcuff him while struggling on the ground. The prisoner declared that lie did not care if they hanged him.

Robert Arthur Samwavs was charged with indecent assault at Huntly on n hoy, was found guilty at the Hamilton Supreme Court to-day. Sentence was postponed.

NEW PLYMOUTH, June 16

Michael .Joseph Cronin, a fireman on the Hororata, at the Brakewater Hotel asked Thomas Shane, the ship’s cook, to shout for him. Shane agreed. A second time a similar request was made, and Shane agreed. A third time Cronin asked for more, but this time Shane refused, so Cronin broke his nose with a blow of the fist. Today Cronin was fined £2 for assault.

Caught between two trucks while shunting operations were in progress at the Pukeweka Sawmill Company's yards at Mananui yesterday, A. E. Mound sustained injuries which neces-. sitated his removal to the hospital. He is suffering front a crushed chest with a broken collar bone and ribs.
