PRECEDENT FOR PREMIER’S THREAT.

BLENHEIM, June 16
In an interview with a representative of the “Express” in regard tc fhe Prime Minister's threat to i.eal retrospectively with those importers who think of anticipating any increase in the tariff. Hon R. MeCallum pointed out that the precedent for this was wisely laid down by the late Hon Mr Massey in connection with the blunder of the gift of £IOOO per annum free of death duty. Mr Massey had publicly announced mat- though the Supreme Court had discovered a blunder in the drafting of the .Amending Act which allowed a wealthy man to give away any number of thousands in one year free, that was not- the intention of the Legislature, and lie gave a public warning that be would not hesitate to pass retrospective legislation for getting back on those attempting .o benefit their legatees by giving c-ach £IOOO in any one year.
