LONG FLIGHT

BLENHEIM, June 12

Captain Buckley, in the Fairey 111 planje, left Cliristcliurdi at D.oO today, intending to call at Blenheim on his way north. As he had not aimed at midday, inquiries were set afoot. The airman had not been seen at Wellington or Paekakariki, , but had been observed during the morning between Kaikoura and Ward, and the report stated that his engine appeared to be running badly. At two 'o’clock the Marlborough Aero Club sent out a plane to search the southern coast, but a quarter ot an ( hour ilater advice was received that Captain Buckley had reached Auckland.

: The search plane is still out, there being no means of recalling it.

A record speed for air travel ,-n New Zealand .was established .by FiighV Lieutenant M. W. Buckley to-day. This was when be flew one of the, Government’s “Fairey Three F”, planes from the Soekb.urn Aerodrome at Christchurch, '~'t'o the Hobsonville . air, base at Auckland* • ; in three hours and forty minutes. It was a non-stop flight, and the distance by the route folio a Cd. .. W®® .calculated by the pilot to be 032 miles. . The average speed attained by Laptain Buckley—-that is the ground speed—was thus 145 miles per hour. A southerly gale enabled tins great speed to be attained. At times the velocity of the gale reached fifty miles an hour. Sockburn Aerodrome was left at 9.50 a.m., and Hobsonville was reached at 1.30 p.m.
