NEW ZEALAND HOTEL CHARGES

DAMAGING STATEMENT.

WELLINGTON, June 12

“We live and learn,” was the remark of a member at a meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce Council last evening, when a paragraph from an English journal was quoted in which it was stated that hotel charges in New Zealand ranged from “£35 a week in small towns up to a.s much as £125 in Christchurch.’ The paragraph, which appeared in the May number of the “Sartorial Gazette,” was as follows: — ‘Hotel accommodation is scarce and dear in New Zealand. Charges range from £35 per week in small towns up to as much as £125 per week in Christchurch. House rents are exorbitant everywhere.” The secretary (Air H. S. Fairchild) said he had written to the Government publiyi tv officer pel lift ing out that such a damaging statement appearing in a well known London trade publication must tend to depreciate god (results from the publicity efforts that the Dominion had been making in the Old 'Country in ordei to encourage tourist traffic. A voice: But isn’t this a humorous paper? (Laughter.) The secretary: Oh, dear. no. It takes itself very seriously. Tlie chairman, iMr IX J. McGowan): 35s to 125 s would be nearer the mark.
