The social room of the Soldiers’ Hall was crowded last evening for the wind-up of the Westland Competitions festival. Visitors were present from Greymouth and elsewhere, The proceedings opened with an hour’s concert in Xvhich the following took part: Pianoforte solos, Misses L. Staines and Gwen Jacobs; violin soles, Messrs D. Heinz and J. Ackers; vocal numbers, Misses Adkins (Greynxoutli), IE. Knight, A. Lynn. R. Morgan, C. Staines; recitations, Misses IT. Perry, .S. Sauciers, Joy Ward, M. Perry, M. McGavin. and. Master S. Blank. The accompanists were Misses Daly, Ackers,' Lynn. Staines and Drake. The presentation of prizes and tronjhies followed, being made by the President (Mr Evans) who expressed gratification that the Competitions had passed off so successfully, and thanked all who had contributed to the success. The ladies committee then served supper to all present, and a dance in the large hall followed, music being supplied by MuParry’s mechanical gramophone supplemented by (pianoforte contributions. The evening passed off very pleasantly and was a happy winding up of the annual festival. The President stated it was hoped to conduct, next year’s Competitions on like lines when the Committee looked forward to the same appreciated support from the competitors.

A slight disorganisation of traffic on the main south railway line occurred on Tuesday afternoon as a result of a waggon on a goods train from Ashburton becoming derailed about a mile on the Christchurch side of Weedons. As there is a double track between Rolleston and Christchurch, no delays to passenger traffic resulted, the trains using the remaining track as a single line between Rolleston and Templeton,' a distance of five miles. The goods train, which had a passenger car attached, left Ashburton at 11.10 a.m., and was clue in Christchurch at 2.44 p.m. Shortly after leaving Weedons, an L.A. waggon about the middle of the train developed a fault in one of the axles, causing it to leave the rails. The waggon was dragged >a distance of just over a quarter of a mile before the trouble was discovered and the tiain pulled up. It was found that the wheels of the waggon had done a fairly considerable amount of damage to the track, a number of fishplates he ing knocked off and numerous sleeper,, cracked. Many of the wires for the automatic signals were also broken and had to he replaced.

The death took*’-plate at the Ottjr v / Hospital cm Wednesday evening at ff o’clock of Mr George Drummond Edgar, at the age of 62 years. Deceased, who was a native of Nelson, had been ailiilg for some time past. The lato Air Edgar was even-known on the West Coast, for many years carrying bn business as a-jeweller in Hokitika and Reefton. Upon disposing of his business at the Taij.Wr| place deceased for’ a number of years took up farthing in the Tnangahua Valley, finally taking over the business of the well-known carrying firm of Bevan and Co., Westport, some three years ago. He leaves,a wife and family of three daughters,; namely, Mrs* McNamara (North Island), Misses Hazel and Mabel Edgar, and one son, Frederick.
