STEAMER SERVICE
LAPSE OF EXTENDED MAIL SUBSIDY
AUCKLAND, June 10
The fact that the extended Government mail subsidy on the steamer service between Australia and South Island ports has lapsed was mentioned to-day by the Postmaster-General, the Mon J. Donald.
Last year the Union Company entered into an arrangement with the Government to place an extra steamer on the run between Melbourne and Wellington and South Island ports. The subsidy for the mail service was fixed at £38,000 a year.- to he paid by the Post and Telegraph Department. However, the Manuka, which, with the Maheno, was to carry on the new service. was wrecked on December 16ch. last year. As she has not yet been replaced, the augmented subsidy has la-psed, and the nion Company is now subsidised only on the old rate for one vessel.
“I do not think any steps have yet been taken to replace the Manuka,’ Mr Donald said. “Following her loss the Govei'innent’s arrangement with the Tin ion Company definitely lapsed, hut if another vessel were available for the service the matter would probably be reconsidered.”
