A FIRE

MASTERTON, June 10

A fire was discovered in the early hours of the morning in a block of sample rooms, situated in Williams St. it completely destroyed the room in which the outbreak occurred, together with samples of Atldess and Co., Dtinefim. The stock of Burgood Son and Ewan in an adjoining room was slightly damaged by smoive and water. The building, which was occupied by R. V. Hatch, and owned by the James McAra estate, is covered nv policy of £1209 in the Standard Office .

ALLEGED BURGLARY

CHRISTCHURCH, June 11

The sequel to a sensational disturbance in Sydenham, on a recent morning, was heard in the Magistrate’s Court when two men were charged with burglary and attempted burglary at the shop of W. E. Munday and Sons. Accused were, George E. Gann and 'William Frederick Garner. The exhibits produced by the police included a plug of geligime, fuse and detonators. The shattered portion of a door was also shown.

Accused pleaded not guilty and were committed for trial. Police witnesses alleged that Cann had been caught in the street after neighbours had been aroused by a noise in the shop.

NEGRO FIREMAN HUNT

AUCKLAND, June 10

Following the affray on the tramp steamer Quercus last Thursday, when a negro fireman, Edward Seldon, was found on the deck in an unconscious condition ,three seamen on the vessel named Reginald James Kemp, aged 22, John Owen Jenkins, aged 23, and Reginald Montgomery, aged 33, were charged in the. Police Court with assault, causing bodily harm. The charge was reduced to one of common assult to enable the men to be dealt witli summarily, as their steamer is to sail shortly from the Dominion, and the accused are .prohibited immigrants. “I think the ends of justice will be met if I convict the accused and order them to pay the expenses,” said the Magistrate. He ordered the accused to pay whatever hospital expenses were incurred by Seldon; Doctor’s fee 10s 6cl, ambulance fee £1 Is and witness expenses 10s.

CHARITY DAY. WELLINGTON, June 11. Last Saturday was Charity Dav with the local Rugby Union and about £240 was received from its matches.

CHILD INJURED

HASTINGS, June 11

Hugh, the six year old son of D. H. McLeod, licensee of Hastings Hotel, is now in hospital suffering from severe injuries to the head and face, as the result of being knocked down by a motor car driven by Samuel Cobb The boy was running home from school and Cobb’s view was obstructed by a car he was following. The child regained consciousness early this morning and is now reported to be out of danger.

RAILWAY CHARGES

STRATFORD, June 11. The Chamber of Commerce last night decided to place the following views before the Railway Commission:— That 'the freight charge should be in strict relation to the service rendered ; that no political consideration should influence railway freight charges or fares; that railway freights should not be used for protective purposes.

The opinion of the meeting was that if these principles were put into operation, the railways could be made to pay.

UXEMPLOYMENT RELIEF,

AUCKLAND, June 11

A conference of forty delegates from Auckland Local Bodies unanimously resolved to affirm the principle that unemployment relief should be a charge on the National Exchequer; also to de-

mand that. Government grant £IO,OOO

to Auckland Hospital Board for relief purposes pending legislation to deal with the problem. The Hospital Board chairman said that Auckland local authorities to March 1929, had spent £260,150 on special works. In addition to these works, the amount distributed by the Board and other organisations was probably £IOO,COO, and still there was poverty, and the number of unemployed was not decreasing.
