The body of a man named. William Carter, butcher, of Balclutha, was found this morning in the tunnel on the Port C halmers line at this side pi Sawyer’s Bay. At Sawyer’s Bay, blood was noticed on the wheels of the carriages, and .on going hack to investigafe, the guard found the bodybadly mutilated in the tunnel. He deceased .w is .a married man with five children. He had a, brother living at Sawyer’s Bay. An inqtiest was opened to-pight with Mr- PI. W. Bundle, S.M., as Coroner. Evidence given by a passenger on the 11.6 a.m. train from Dunedin to Port Chalmers that he last, saw the deceased standing on a carriage platorm between St. Leonard’s Station and the tunnel, but on the train from the tunnel, the deceased 'was not to be seen. Going through the tunnel, witness had noticed a bump and on arriving ht Sawyer’s Bay he notified the guard. The train was backed to the tunnel, where the remains were picked up and conveyed to Port Chalmers. D?ce 's'fed : .was .well known in •Baldutlia.f where, he had been in business : for many ydars.
