HOSPITAL SUBSIDIES

EFFECT OF REDUCTION

FOXTON, May 31

Speaking at a public function here last night, Mr J. C. Hornblow, chairman of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, made reference to the three million anticipated deficit in the Government’s revenue for the current financial years, as stated by the Prime Minister (Mr Forbes), and touched on the possible reduction in the hospital subsidies. “Tliqre fis nothing which will prevent sickness,” said Mr Hornblow,” and the indigent poor and destitute will always be with us. It is our duty to look after them, and if the Government, by reason of a fall in revenue, curtails the hospital subsidies, either for capital,or maintenance purposes, the levies on the contributing authorities will increase if the present efficiency is to be maintained as it is. The hospitals are paying considerable sums to maintain the unemployed dependents out of maintenance.”
