HIT BY TRAIN

A CROSSING ACCIDENT. An accident happened at the railway crossing in Weld St. on Saturday afternoon at 2.40 o’clock resulting in the train from Ross coming into collision w th a. motor car owned and driven, by Air F. Chesterman Borough Foreman. It appears that Mr Chesterman was proceeding up Weld street at a fairly slow pace, but it was not till he was almost on the rails that he heard the Ross train coming into the station. He endeavoured to pull up his car, but it ran on to the rails, the front wheels crossing the two rails, and then stopped. Before anything further could be done the train which always comes down the incline from the bridge at a fair speed, struck the car at the front door. It lifted the car and the impact sent the car with a crash some, twenty yards along the road in an oblique direction, it missing an electric pole by a narrow margin of a couple of feet. The "car was considerably smashed in on the right side the running board and door being broken and one wheel smashed and other damage done. Only one window was broken, in spite of the rough handling received. Mr Chesterman, who was alone in the car, suffered some injury to his leg which was jammed when the impact took place, but otherwise escaped injury. It was a very miraculous escape under the circumstances.
