HAMILTON, May. 27

The Waikato Winter Show was opened to-day in inclement weather before a large crowd of visitors by tbo Goverrioi-General, Lord Bledisloe. His Excellency, in his remarks, said that the chief and most hopeful economic development in New Zealand was in the sphere of dairy enterprise, and nowhere was (this development more marked than in the Waikato area; Speaking as one who on niore than one occasion had been President •of the great London Dairy Show, Lord Bledidoe said that he yvas greatly impressed with the excellence of the dairy exhibits at this Waikato Winter Show, and he congratulated itis promoters on the record entry of butter and cheese. The GovernorGeneral said lie was ig[oing to venture to stress four considerations as being (Mileuiivted to promote the prosperity of the fanning community of this cum Cry. Firstly, lie advised: "Always comply with yoiit customifei. s' specifications. Howtever unreasonable they may appear, they are important just now in the matter of cheese andbacon in the Odd Country. Secondly;: Do not waste money .on feefiiiif| that which is not profitable. This mOy ilsefully b’e : stVessetl. as' top-dressing vVith arCfit'ial fertilisers of poor grasses, as: distinct from’ carefully selected mixtures, .and'pas’ tpj tne: feeding of badly shaped pigs or cows with a low milk record. Thirdly: Welcome control as regards the-qual-ity and distribution of your exported produce, remembering always that suit-control. and mutual- control on the part of farmers is prefera/ble to Government control, although the latter is essential until the former is fully developed. Fourthly: : Be rigidly loyal to co-operative principles,; even if an immediate personal advantage' is not always forthcoming. And, lastly," added His Excellency, "do not, if it can be avoided, keep all your, eggs in one basket! In other ords, promote' such side lines of husbandry as ar e consistent with the main purpose of your farming, s'leh, for instance, a-s pigs, poultry,. hoiiey or friiit, which will often yield a margin of profit when your chief commodity is for a, time at a serious discount.”
