The Federal Treasurer, Hon Mr K. G. Theodore, states chat overturns have been made to him by a group ot New York financiers to loan the Commonwealth twenty millions sterling. Their terms, however, he found to be not attractive, and the negotiations are off.

EFFECT OF TARIFF FELT.

The effect of the Ministry’s tariff surcharges and prohibition is already sing felt. To balance the estimated revenue of £44,400.000 front customs and excise duties nearly seven and a half millions must be collected before the end of June, but it is unlikely that more than six,millions will lie received from those sources.
The Treasurer (Mr Theodore) budgeted for a surplus but it is now expected there will be a deficit of from a million to a million and a half sterling-
