RIVALS v. COBDEN
This game was played on Cass Square and resulted in a win for Rivals ’by 13 points (three tries, two being converted) to 3 points (a try) The play throughout was very poor and disappointing. Neither side made much of a showing, though on the whole the Rivals were very lucky. .1 n the first half Aiuir scored a try that was not converted. In the second half lie again scored and converted it. Then Cobden took a hand in the game and had much the best of the play and from their best passing run ol the day Eggleton scored a good try. Sheldon made a poor attempt to improve. Hie visitors continued to attack but though there were some good individual. flashes, bad passing and worse handling spoilt openings time and again,. With the ball in midfield the time bell rang, and the ball being kept in play, a loose Rival rush saw the baly-go to the line where Aiuir took ,a pass, and went over to score his third )t-ry. Converting it himself, the score stood at 13 to 3 in favour of Rivals. Air Gulbush was referee.
KIWI v. BRUNNER
This game was played on No. 2 ground, and again the play generally was of a very medium quality. Kiwi had all the best of the play and won by 14 points (three tries, on.e bein') converted, and a penalty goal) to nil.
In the first half there was only one score, a try' coming near the end of the spell, which was not converted. The play in, the second half did not show much improvement, but Kiwi held the upper hand, and added eleven points to the score, D. Breeze kicked a penalty goal and tries were scored ’by liay-Al.e-Kenzie, Hager and Walker, one of which was converted by Hay-AicKen-zie. Air D. Heen.-in was referee.
UNITED BEAT EXCELSIORS
At Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon the match between Excelsiors (Hokitika) and '"United (Ureymouth) resulted in a win! for United by 14 to 0. From the commencement of the junior match.at 1.30 p.m. a continual shower fell which- marred the attendance, as well as spoiling the prospects of good open play. Towards the second .half of the-match A, ground became a greasy mass .on the grandstand side, the fain however*,, holding off throughout the two senior games. Tin United pack - were, too good for the visitors, and their untiring labours brought the home team out comfortable winners, although about fifteen minutes before time was called, both sets of forwards were a very tired lot. Excelsiors were without the services of J. King,, -whpt was -unable to play owing to an injury to his knee sustained in the fifatch with Stars at Hokitika th'e> previous Saturday. In the first half, Martyn, their full-back, tiad to retire owing to a dislocated shoulder, and was not replaced. Freitas received a nasty cut over the eye after 25 minutes of the second spell had passed, and Hie also retired, leaving the visitors with hut thirteen men from then on.
For United‘ tries were, scored by Eeirgusou, Baldwin and Jamieson (2), Jenkins converting one.
JUNIORS.
Ross defeated Excelsior II by 16 to 6. In the fi'.st spell Mason (Ross; •'C-iTu a b-tIW goal and Mitchell a penahy ;u I. In the second spell Herring, Barker and Head scored tries- for Russ, and Schroder kicked two penalty goals for 'Excelsiors. At A radium Ri mu , defeated Araiiura by 9 points (three tries scored bv Agnew) to 0.
THIRD GRADE. Rimu third grade lieat Kokatahi, at Kokatahi, by 9 to 0.
SHRIMPS,
The State School were again successful, defeating St. Mary’s by two tries to nil.
There were an unusual number of stoppages in the senior games played on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon and the- Amulblance Officer (Mr Pridmore) had'a busy time attending to injuries, the action ol tile Rugby Sub-Union in supplying the kit ol first aid being well' warranted. The games were neither rough or hard, but the number of injuries were unusual. In the Rivals game a forward received a slight concussion, but after a quarter of an hour came hack to normal. In the other game the most serious injury was to Burnett, a member of the visiting-Brunner team, who broke his left collarltone. After receiving attention bv the ambulance officer the injured man was taken away by Mr Ell M. Coulson in a car and received the necessary medical attention.
