An interim statement presented by the Borough Treasurer to the Council meeting on Friday night, showed that the financial year affecting the Borough Fund had closed with a debit of £124. The total. receipts had ibeen £7561, while, the expenditure over < all heads, had been .*£76BSA- This must; be considered very .satisfactory, in the light of the heavy expenditure , out of the Fund for the new pipe ]ijne : .construction from Lfikp’iSaliferi, ; on*; which £lOl2 was spent?.’,; In addition were spent on Jconferete connection with Sewell- and Sale St. drains.. The actual expenditure estimated for works and administration for the year, had men £495,4, while the total expended under the Heads provided for was £5369, so that the Council evidently watched the position closely. Xhe~estimated revenue for Council works and administration was £5031, add the receipts actually collected were £5021, whim* was a very close estimate and result indeed, indicating something of the cave shown by the Treasurer in the details of his work. For the coming year the Council has decided wisely to live, within its present means without increasing the rates. These will be levied on the same basis as last year. The Public Works Committee has, laid out a programme of permanent works which is? to be carried out. as the funds care available. The proposals., include an.extension of the concrete' kerbing and-channelling and attention to the footpaths. ■ Some major expenditure will have to he met in connection with the water works. It will still take a month or six weeks to complete the new pipe line, while constant repairs appear to be necessary to the town reticulation. Some drainage works have to be taken into consideration at Upper Sewell St., and of course the maintenance of the streets must not be let up to any extent with the increased volume of vehicle traffic. The Council will therefore have a good deni of work in hand for the revenue likely to be available. It is essential to live within the means at call, and the Council must exercise a degree of caution for the full financial period. Judged by past results that will no doubt be shown.
