INDIAN DRUG

BIG HAUL AT SYDNEY

SYDNEY, May 9

One of the largest drug hauls yet made was effected by Sergt. Small and Constables Scott aiul Langliam (Regent Street) late yesterday.

An old man who had about 140 ounces of an Indian drug in his possession was taken into custody. The narcotic is valued at nearly £3OO.

The officers trailed their suspectfrom the city to a house in Ultimo where the pounced on him. Past middle-aged, the mail submitted quietly, but maintained he had committed no! offence.

A small parcel wrapped’ in soiled brown paper he carefully guarded and persisted in saying it contained nothing important.

A quick glance at the contents however, caused the police to become suspicious, and they lost no time in getting the man to Regent Street Police Station.

The nature of the drug has not been definitely ascertained. It is believed to be an Indian narcotic.

How it was smuggled to these shores remains a mystery. It is assumed that it was brought in by some person on a boat from India recently, and was- being distributed by the old man merely as a runner for someone in a big way in the nefarious traffic.

The usual way in which the drugis taken is in a drink, in which it is dissolved. Tlie fumes may also be inhaled through a pipe.

A charge of having a prohibited drug in his possesion, was preferred against the arrested person.
