The House of Commons discussed the Bill embracing the Government’s proposal to establish Consumers’ Councils, with power to search the tradesmen’s books, and also providing that the Board of Trade will have the power to fix the prices of commodities.

The Bill was read the second time, after an amendment by Sir P. Cunliffe Lister (Conservative) 'for the rejection of the measure was defeated by 266 votes to 202. Sir P. Cunliffe Lister characterised Mt ( > BjM as meair'no; “Free trade for competitors and fetters for our own industries.”
