1 A request that Parliament should be called . together immediately to deal with the unemployed problem was contained in a telegram sent this morning to Hon. G. W. Forbes, at Wellington, by Mr M. J. Savage, ALP., for Auckland West. Air Savage states that the Alembers ■ individually are.- at present helpless to deal with the subject.. Air Savin go’s telegram was as follows: “The unemployed problem lias reached des"perate stage in Auckland. Numbers running into thousands are either wholly or partially unemployed. Their families are not getting sufficient to eat and winter is upon them. The local - benevolent organisations, both public and private are doing -good work, which is totally- inadequate t,o- meet) the » ; position,;. .Alep, and-woqie'iUl jtpo, want .work, • and a'ro:i willing to files ..anything. They-are human*,; -and must he fed and housed. What will the .Government do to give relief? .It, is no use talking about next, year., People qrc starving now. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ IDEA

Work for thirty unemployed returned soldiers was offered by the Hon: E. A. Ransom,. Minister lor Public .Works, in a telegram received by the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association.
