AERO CLUB

RECOGNISED IN WAIRARAPA

MASTEIiTON, May 8

In reply to a deputation, which placed the claims of the Wairarapa Aero Club before him at Wellington to-day, the Minister of Defence, Hon. Mr Cobbe, agreed to grant the Club recognition as an independent unit, entitled to the State financial and other assistance granted to clubs so recognised. The members of the deputation stressed importance of Wairarapa from an aviation point of view. The Club was firmly established, as might be seen from its membership, the number of trainees appearing under its auspices, the engagement of a capable pilot, the acquisition, of a plane, and the measures taken to secure the establishment of landing ground. The Club was no mushroom growth, but was solidly established. It was submitted that it was only fair and just that a district as important as Wairarapa should be accorded the recognition'and assistance tha t had . alre'ady been accorded to other districts.

The Minister said he had not realised that the Cluib was in such a strong position. A very convincing case had been made out. He agreed to grant the Club’s recognition as an independent unit. When the Minister was approached, on a previous occasion, he suggested the Club’s amalgamation with the Wellington Club. _____
