THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
THE POET LAUREATE
The death of Dr Bridges has. raised tne question whether the office of Poet laureate shoud be continued) and, if continued, who should be appointed to the post. The Laureate is really an official attached to the household of the English sovereigns. He is entitled to wear tho uniform 'of “an officer of the Household.of the fourth class,”! In the eighteenth century 'he immediately preceded the .Royal Rat Catcher. In Norman times the king’s jester and the king’s minstrel seems to have filled between them the duties of ministering to tne royal tastes and celebi’ating regal deeds of prowess. Richard I carried a special bard to Palestine to sing his exploits, and Edward I took one to Scotland in 1304 for the same purpose. At Bannockburn the Scottish soldiers captured the royal bard and made him celebrate their own prowess as the price of his freedom.
