An eight roomed residence, situated in beautiful grounds, and owned and occupied by Mrs A. Small, with its contents was destroyed by fire early this morning. Mrs Small was the only occupant at the time. There was a low water pressure owing to repairs at the intake.

WELLINGTON, May 8. The Directors of the Press Associaton to-day appointed A. B. Lane, •news editor of Christchurch “Times” and “Star,” as Manager "in succession to Mr W. A. Atack, whose approaching retirement was recently announced.
MAYOR HONORED
ROTORUA, May 8
At the conclusion of the Rotorua Borough Council meeting last night, the Deputy-Mayor (0. Urquhart) 011 behalf of Councillors, presented the Mayor (T. Jackson) with a chain of office, as a mark of appreciation of the manner he had carried out the duties of the position, .and of his appointment as Chairman of the Municipal Conference.
£IOOO COMPENSATION.
DUNEDIN, May 8.
In the Arbitration Court, Ella Muriel Stokes was awarded £I,OOO against May Lambert,' trading as the Central Shoe Store, for the death of her husband, while in defendant’s employ. Deceased was a boot salesman. He cut his finger, and as a result of septic poisoning death ensued, resulting from acute septicaemia. ,
RESIDENCE BURNT
HASTINGS, May 8.
A seven roomed residence adjoining lona College in Havelock North, owned and occupied by Sellwyn Averill: was burnt to the ground at nine o’clock last night. The Aver'ill’s were absent spending the evening with friends. Nothing was saved. The building was a mass of flames ’before discovered by neighbours. Insurances will be available.
FOUND DEAD. HASTINGS, May 8
Dugald McKenzie, aged 52, married, with several children, and a cooper, was found lying dead last night outside his motor shed at his residence in Hastings. He left the house at seven and not returning at ten, the family on searching found his body as stated. Heart failure was the cause of. his death. An inquest was unnecessary.
WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED.
CHRISTCHURCH, May 8
Information that work for 165 men was being provided in Canterbury and. West Coast districts' was given by Hon P. A. De la Perelle to a deputation of unempoyed which waited on him this morning. Included in this is work for 36 returned soldiers in the Westport district. „

At the Poice Court, Harry Saunders, aged 31 'years, was fined £IOO for keeping a common gaming house.
