CHEAPER FREIGHTS

11,000 MILES—ISs A TON.

(Australian Press Association.)

ADELAIDE, May' 1.

One result of the depressed state of the Eritish freight market jis that it has been possible recently to arrange cheaper transport if or iron ore from AVhyalla, South Australia, to various overseas centres.

This trade has been assisted by the export of British coal to the Commonwealth and the lack of any keen demand for ships to. load wheat in Australia for Europe—a considerable quantity of grain was recently reported to be unsold on, the way from Australia ports. # Ships which carried coal from England to Australia have proved suitable to load iron ore 'at AVhyalla which lies close to Port Pirie. and a number of full cargoes have loaded there foi Japan, Baltimore and Rotterdam. Tonnage, has been secured for the voyage of about 11.00 miles to the Dutch port at 15s a ton—a low rate of freight, in which good facilities of loading and discharging would have been •-'then into account. It is understood that the possibilities of importing th - iron ore from AVhyalla into one or two centres in Great Britain have also beer considered, and a steamer has just been fixed to bring a cargo to Grangemouth at the same rate of 15s a ton.
