CAPETOWN, May 5
Five natives were killed and sixteen were seriously injured, thong! many oi them only slightly, in ;
conflict with the police in the Worcester district of Cape Colony. I'or many weeks there the natives and coloured population have threatener to hold a demonstration under the auspices of the Industrial Workers'* Union, which is allied to the International. 'I lie leaders of the natives however, in view of the police taking precautions withheld action until yesterday.. A crisis came when the Chief Detective of Capetown and four police motored past a crowd which stoned their car.
Thereupon nineteen police, with fixed bayonets, were summoned,. Two of these advanced on the crowd, with tne object of arresting a natTve for assault; Both were stabbed.
Captain Carter, in making a final effort, was felled, and his face was cut open with an axe. The poli e fired on the crowd.
Constable Walters, was stabbed, I and another constable was saved by a pocket book.
