AMERICA CUP
SHAMROCK V LAUNCHED
LONDON, April 15
“I feel strongly that we shall do the trick this time and bring the old mug to the country from which it has been absent 80 years,” said Sir Thomas Lipton, himself within a month of his 80th birthday, at a luncheon on the occasion of the launching of Shamrock V. This marked another stage in his 33-vear struggle to regain the America Cup. In thanking Lady Shaftesbury for launching the yacht, Sir Thomas recalled that in 1914 she launched Shamrock TV., which imprecedently won two races against the defender. He said he hoped Shamrock V would win four.
Colonel Duncan Neill claimed that the fact that Shamrock V was launched two hours ahead of the first of the four American defenders was a happy augury.
Shamrock V carries a mast more than 150 ft,. high and a mainsail with over 500 square feet of canvas. It has two-inch thick mahogany sides and bolted steel frames.
