MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS
MONDAY, APRIL 28th
AT HOKITIKA
The annual meeting was held in the Town Hall at 7.80 p.m. Present: Mr S. J. Preston (voted to the chair) and ten householders, of which the Committee numbered eight. The minutes of last annual meeting were read and confirmed.
ANNUAL REPORT,
Ladies and Gentlemen: —Your committee has much pleasure in submitting the Annual Report in which has been incorporated the Rector’s report. The year has been a very satisfactory one, and, generally speaking, splendid progress has be'en made in all matters connected witli the School.
HEALTH
The health of the children has been very satisfactory, with the exception of an epidemic of whooping cough and mumps during the last two months, which fortunately did not seriously affect the attendance.
ROLL AND ATTENDANCE
It is satisfactory to record an increase in. the Roll number of both the primary and Secondary Departments.
.. In the Primary School the present roll number is 309, an increase of three from last year. In consequence of the average attendance for the year ended Dec. 31st., Ibz9, having reached 283, as against 278 the preceding year, the status of the School has been raised from 5a to sb.
In the Secondary School the attendance has been well maintained and a re ord high level has been reached this year——the Roll number now' being 110. It *is -interesting to note- that the aver-age-'Attendance-. in! 1925 was 55.7 and the average attendance this year is, 'i62.4. STAFF CHANGES
Quite a number of changes in the staff has been made this year. Miss S. M. Bfowii (temporary) was replaced by Mr D. AV. Anderson (permanent) as Commercial Instructor. -
. Miss J. G. Musgrove (temporary) was replaced by Miss E. Dale (permanent)-. This permanent appointment is due -tn,'.',the improved status previohSlvYeferred to.-
. Mr D. o, ;? 'fWilliairison was transferred to- Geraldine- and:'his place has been filled by Mr C. Cl'. Warren. An extra temporary assistant in Mr j, B. Jldva hrts been added to the Staff to replace ’Miss K. Kennedy who was temporarily appointed last year.
Miss J. Veale and Miss C. Newman have -been appointed Probationers to replace Miss M. Wild and Mr H. M. Sweney, who have gone to Training College.
Miss E. M. Pedder, Probationery Assistant, has been replaced by Miss J. Dixon.
Mrs Linklater, shorthand mistress, has resigned and Miss H. Ridland and Miss El. Robinson were appointed as student-assistants.
EXAMINATION SUCCESSES
1—“ D” certificates: 2 passes, 3- partial passes. , 2—Higher leaving certificates: 3 passes. 3 Matriculation : 3 passes. 4 Public Service Entrance: 10 passes. y 5 Government Shorthand Typists: 5 passes. 6 Senior Free places: 24 passes. 7 Proficiency: 28 passes.. Competency : 4 passes.
SPORTS
i The Annual Sports were again held this year and proved a great success. The weather was everything that could be desired and a good attendance of the public lent interest to the proceedings. In football the boys won the third grade competition ,and also the thirdgrade and shrimps seven-a-side tournament.
In cricket 4 games were played which were won by the School. The wins included a game with a combined Greymouth team.
Basket-ball and tennis were also indulged in, in season. The swimming sports were held last month and were very successful. The following are the swimming certificates gained :— soyds. 22; 20yds. 10; 880yds. 7.
ANNUAL FAIR,
The Annual Fair this year resulted in a record sum of £9O being raised. The Committee wish to thank the Staff and scholars for their splendid efforts and also the people for their generous support.
NEW COMMERCIAL ROOM
A great improvement in accommodation for the Commercial Classes has been effected by the transfer of the South Spit schoolroom to our school grounds. In addition to the increased accommodation, a donation of six new typewriters from the High Board has been received and are now in full use. The present conditions are
a marked improvement on lhose obtaining laot yva- mid should be reflected by in reused efficiency, both in pupils and staff.
GROUND WORK
Your Committee lias made every effort to improve the school grounds and quite a creditable amount of work has been done. Practically all the available area in front of the school is now laid down in lawns and has considerably enhanced the beauty of the grounds. A new fen-e with seating accommodation has been erected and painted between the Agricultural plots and the lawn, also a new sand playground has been formed and curbed. The edge of the newly formed lawn has also been curbed—giving a finish and tidy appearance. Fresh paint has been applied to the school gates and the fences along the entrance and also ail extension lias been made to the bicycle shed to giye additional accommodation. The thanks of the Committee are due to Mr T. Coyle, who kindly mowed the grass on the football ground.
Further representations were until* to the Minister of Education—Hon Mr Atmore— : on his recent visit to the district, regarding the purchase, by the Department, of the two sections along the school frontage, also an increase in capitation" was requested. ■
SCHOOL CONCERT
At . the break-up of the school for the summer holidays a school concert was held for the purpose of raising funds lor the school prizes. Two performances were given and were a credit to the performers and the instructress. After paying for the prizes—about £3o—the balance of £SO was handed over to the Committee. Miss Duff is to be heartily congratulated on the success of the concert and the. Committee wish to express their appreciation of the great efforts that she made to achieve such splendid results. It is about 16 years since a school concert was held and the work of Miss Duff is very commendable. Arising out of the ■ concert, the orchestra which Supplied the-music, is being kept together under the superintendence of Miss Duff, and.it is hoped that her efforts in this connection will be very successful. We are happy to report that the initial steps.have been taken 'to provide a School Drum and Fife Band. .. All the preliminary work lias been done and the Band will commence practice this week. Mr Richards is to be highly commended for his work in this matter and for the generous spirit whih has prompted him to undertake the instruction of the Band. We wish him, also, every success.
LIBRARY
A snecial history library for the High School wvas set up during the year and this. Committee purchased about 100 books, there are about 145 books now on'the. shelves and: should prove a decided acquisition to the scholars .in the Secondary Department.
j .1 CAMERA CLUB
ft is pleasing to record that a Camera Club has been formed among the High School pupils by Mr D. W. Anderson. The Committee have to express their pleasure at, i seeing so. many of our teachers taking such an interest in the social side of school life.
HOSTEL
During the summer vacation the High School Board established a Hosou for the use of pupils attending the Secondary School. This was rendered necessary by the closing of All Saint s Hostel. The Board are to be congratulated on the splendid appointments of the new Hostel and it is to be hoped that it will get the support that itTulTy deserves.
HIGH SCHOOL BOARD VACANCY
Your Committee made representations to the Education Board re the vacancy caused by the death of the late Hon H. L. Michel who was the Education Board’s nominee on that body with the result that Mr W. H. Shannon has been appointed to fill the position. We congratulate Mr Shannon on his appointment and we feel that the direct representation of a member of the School Committee should fie very helpful both to the High School Board and to the School Committee.
RESIGNATION OF RECTOR
It is with sincere regret that we have to report that our Rector—Mr E. Partridge, M.A,—resigned his position as from . 31st. March, to take up an Inspectorship in the Wanganui District. Your committee—in conjunction with the parents and scholars, took an opportunity of making a presentation to Mr Partridge and of making eulogistic reference to the splendid work that he has performed for the School during his term as Rector. Mr Partridge specially requests that the loyal support which he received from the Committee, Staff and parents will be accorded to his successor. Mr J. L. Menzies, of Burwood, has been appointed to fill the vacancy, and will take up his duties on the Ist. May.
In conclusion your Committee wish to thank the parents and the people geiterally for their splendid support which the school has received on every occasion that it has been requested. We also wish to congratulate the staff for their excellent work during the year and to hope that the high standard of efficiency which the School has attained will be zealously maintained in the future. The balance sheet sliowcd the general account to nave a credit of £lO 4s lid, with accounts owing of £l6. Received.
The following nine nominated were declared duly elected:—Mrs J. H. Wilson, Messrs Richards, Sweney, Breeze, Conning, Armstrong, Redder, Shannon and Chestcrman.
Mr Richards moved that the Education Department lie requested to make rree places available in any school, irrespective of where the parents reside, in the event of a change of residence being necessary owing to ill-iieailli. Seconded by Mr Armstrong and carried.
NEW COMMITTEE
The new Committee then met, all being present except Mr Breeze. Air A. C. Armstrong was re-elected Chairman; Mr J. Conning, Hon. Secretary; Air H. I{. Sweney, Hon. Treasurer.
The Dental Nurse reported: For March the total operations were 356, total attendances 150, number of patients re-examined during month, 24. Received.
The meeting then concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair. . Accounts as scheduled were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated.
ARTHURA ROAD
The annual meeting of householders was held in the school-room aiid there was a record attendance present. Mr A. Richards (Chairman of the outgoing; Committee) was voted to the chair.: Nominations were {beii called for, eight being received. As a commitee of five only, was required, an election took place, the result being that the old committee were returned by a 'substantial majority. The , residents are to be congratulated on the interest they take in the welfare of the school and by again returning the old members by such a substantial majority, signified that appreciation to the .ommittee’s endeavours at all times to further the interests of the school as a whole.
