BOOKMAKERS FINED.

WELLINGTON, April 28,

Fines totalling £575 were imposed by Mr Page S.M., oil four men who pleaded guilty to bookmaking. They were Harry Corner, 38, a barman, charged with using the private bar of Carlton Hotel as a common gaming house. He was fined £SO, in default 2 months. Robert Henry Jones, who had been previously convicted, was fined the substantial sum of £3OO.

Ralph Kill's Thompson, 50, also previously convicted,was not fined £2OO. Edward George Munns, 50, was fined £25 in default 2 months. Default in the cases of Jones and Thompson was three months and two months respectively. A fifth man Stanley William Findlay, 41, elected to be tried by a jury, and was remanded to May 7th on bail.

SUPREME COURT,

DUNEDJN, April 2S

The criminal sitting of the Supreme Court commenced before Mr Justice Kennedy this morning. The calendar consists of four charges of carnal knowledge, and one of sheep stealing.

Mr A. C. Hanlon was sworn in as King’s Counsel, by Justice Kennedy today.

A FATAL CRASH

NEW PLYMOUTH, April 28

Fatal injuries were received by a Maori motor cyclist, Tamaonq .Tuteuruoho, aged 43, a fanner of Oka to, when his machine sruck a tram car on the south road at 7 p.m. on Saturday in New Plymouth. The street is wide and well lighted and there are no explanations of the accident. An inquest opened on Sunday and was adjourned sine die.

PALMERSTON N., April 29.

The biennial moveable conference of New Zealand Branch of Manchester Un_ itv of Oddfellows opened this morning.. The Grandmaster! (F. ; "Prlcnaiiid of. Ashburton) .presided. ' ’Deputies were present from all parts of the Dominion.

The Grandmaster stated the holding of a conference at Palmerston''North was a direct compliment to the: Loyal M nnawatu Lodge/to commorate the fiftieth anniversary of its establishment.

Mayor Gratam was welcomed by .the Lodge and expressed pleasure at the meeting being held here. , • The report stated that at the end of 1929 the number of lodges legis-tere-d under the New Zealand branch totalled 170. a n increase of seven -:onipared with the total at the end of 1928. During two years the membership had increased by 1751, the total at the end of 1929 /being 22,042 males and 2002 females. • The average increase in 1928. was 3.61 per cent and jirt' 1929 4.04-per cent. The income from all sources for the past year was. £59,982. After meeting obligations in respect of benefits general administratipii and replace investments, £475 was carried forward to the current account in the bank.

The report also referred to the great difficulty ..Experienced in obtaining sound securities for replacemen, a feature' which appeared to he the general experience of all lending active institutions.

BOOKIE ASSISTANT FINED

DUNEDIN, April 28

WTrr.am George Lindsay, a barman at the Prince of Wales Hotel was caught red-handed on Easter Monday taking bets for a bookmaker unknown, and to-day was fined £35. Betting materials showed defendant had taken ]6O bets totalling £142, and received a small commission front the principal. The Magistrate said if ‘there was a real Sportsmen’s Association of which the Court had heard on previous occasions, there should be no difficulty about the payment of the flue.
